What is phonics?

The teaching of phonics is an essential component of the teaching of early reading. Phonics is a systematic approach to reading. It teaches the children to decode words using a blending and segmenting approach.

We use the DfE’s ‘Letters and Sounds’ programme to structure our phonics teaching and have added in our own John Keble style to teach it every day. From Nursery to year 2 we have adopted the same style of teaching phonics to ensure that the children are confident and have a strong foundation when leaving year 2.
